Novice & Atom City – Playoff Rules

The novice and atom city playoffs begin this weekend.  Period lengths will be as normal.  We will drop the clock with 5 min left in the permit as per normal.  If the teams are tied at the end of regulation, the game will immediately go to a 3 player shootout.  If still tied, sudden victory shootout after equal attempts.  No player can shoot until everyone (excluding goalies) on their team has gone.

SAWHA Playoff Rules

2018 SAWHA Playoff Rules

Prior to the game for all tiers, the referees must:

  1. Ensure both teams have included their team name on the game sheet with their roster.
  2. Ensure the teams have recorded who their initial three shootout players will be. This should be done by writing “S1,” “S2,” and “S3” next to the players’ names on the roster portion of the game sheet.

Dropping the game clock rules for all tiers:

  1. If there are ten minutes remaining in the ice permit, the playing clock should be reduced to 2 minutes at the next stoppage, regardless of the score.
  2. If there are five minutes remaining in the ice permit and the score is tied, the three player shootout will take place instead of dropping the clock to 2 minutes.

Shootout rules for all tiers:

  1. The inital shootout will be 3 shooters for each team.
  2. The visiting team will shoot first.
  3. If a player is serving a penalty at the conclusion of the third period, they may not shoot in the first three shooters of the shootout, but may shoot in the fourth or higher rounds.
  4. If the shootout is tied after each team has had three shots, the shootout will become “sudden death” – the team shooting second (the home team) will still have the chance to tie the shootout even if the team shooting first (the visiting team) scores.
  5. No player may shoot twice in a shootout until all other players on their team have taken a shot.
  6. If a team declines to participate in the shootout, the game will be declared a loss for that team.

Extra rule for SAWHA tier 6 and for SAWHA Rec:

  1. No player may score more than three goals in one game. Should any player score a fourth goal, the goal will be disallowed but the following faceoff will still occur at center ice.

All playoff games require a winner. In the event of a tie game at the end of regulation time a 3 player shootout will take place.

The home team will decide who will shoot first. If after 3 shooters the game is still tied, then teams are to proceed to a 1 shooter shootout until the tie is broken. HCOP Officiating Manual

Have you ever wonder what is the actual penalty shot procedure?

Or maybe you have heard a mentor and/or supervisor saying “working the line” when you were a linesman at one of your game and aren’t sure what it is?

Well, if you look under the ARA Official in the resources tab you will find the HCOP Officiating Manual (or click here) where you will find answers to those questions and more!

This is a great resource and following what’s in it will ensure that you as an official do what you are suppose to do in your specific role on and off the ice but also will ensure that we as officials are consistent in our message and in our standards. If you are a new or newer official I would highly recommend that you take time to go through the whole manual if you haven’t done so already. On that note, even if you have been around for a few years it is always a good idea to re-read once in a while as this will keep everyone’s knowledge sharp.

Travel Tournament Update (Dec 8-10.2017)

Welcome to another tournament!

Rules will be available at the timekeepers box.

Enjoy the high levels of hockey that will be played over the weekend!
